The History of Jewelry | From Antiquity to Today
A timeless journey of art, culture and personal expression
Jewelry has never been just decorative elements. From the first moment of its appearance, it has been a symbol of power,
social status, faith and personal identity. Its magic endures time and evolves with man –
sometimes in the form of an amulet, sometimes as a piece of high aesthetic jewelry.
The following is a brief journey through the history of jewelry, from the first references in prehistoric times to the modern era of today’s fashion.
Antiquity: Jewelry with sacred & cultural weight
The first civilizations – from Egypt and Mesopotamia, to ancient Greece and Rome –
used jewelry not only for its beauty, but also for its symbolic value.
They were carriers of protection (amulets), an indication of social status or even a connecting link with the divine.
In ancient Greece, jewelry was a sign of nobility and cultural wealth.
They were used in ceremonies, weddings and religious practices, and were characterized by detail, geometric designs and natural motifs.

Middle Ages & Renaissance: Luxury for the Few
In the Middle Ages, jewelry was mainly limited to noble and royal courts.
Gold elements, precious stones and religious symbols dominated.
During the Renaissance, art and fashion flourished and jewelry became works of art,
inspired by mythology, nature and ancient models. The craftsmen of the time used enamel, diamonds and pearls, creating pieces with symbolic and cultural significance.

20th – 21st centuries: From Art Deco to modern expression
The 20th century brought a revolution in jewelry design. The Art Deco era (1920–1935) introduced strong geometric patterns
and bold colors. The 1960s and 1970s brought handmade boho pieces, while from the 1980s onwards
we saw the return of extravagance and luxury.
Today
Jewelry functions as a means of personal expression – it is not defined by gender, age or social class.
From minimal everyday to statement jewelry of high aesthetics, they reflect the style, character and desires of each person.
